What this calculator does

This calculator works out the tip on a bill and splits the total evenly between any number of people. It updates as you type and shows three numbers: the tip per person, the total per person, and the grand total including tip.

How to use it

  1. Enter the Bill Amount before tip.
  2. Pick a tip percentage, or select Custom and type your own (for example 18).
  3. Enter the Number of People sharing the bill.
  4. Read off what each person owes. Reset clears everything for the next bill.

How it's calculated

tip = bill × tip % ÷ 100

per person = (bill + tip) ÷ people

Results are shown to the nearest cent.

A worked example

Four friends share an $86.40 dinner and leave an 18% tip:

  • Tip: $86.40 × 0.18 = $15.55
  • Grand total: $86.40 + $15.55 = $101.95
  • Each person pays $101.95 ÷ 4 = $25.49, of which $3.89 is tip

About rounding

Splitting money evenly rarely comes out to whole cents. In the example, four payments of $25.49 add up to $101.96, one cent more than the total. If the restaurant needs the exact amount, one person can pay a cent less. Many groups simply round each share up to the next dollar and let the difference go to the tip.

Tipping on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?

Enter whichever total you want to tip on. Many people in the US tip on the amount before sales tax, but tipping on the full bill is common too and makes little difference on smaller checks.

An example with tax and rounding up

The calculator doesn't add sales tax, so enter the amount you're tipping on and add each person's share of the tax yourself. A $120.00 meal plus $9.60 tax, three people, 20% tip on the pre-tax amount:

  • Enter $120.00 and 20%: the tip is $24.00 and each person's share is $144.00 ÷ 3 = $48.00.
  • Add a third of the tax ($3.20): $51.20 each.
  • Rounded up to $52 each, the group pays $156.00. The extra $2.40 goes to the server, making the tip about 22%.

Frequently asked questions

How much should I tip?

It depends on the country and the service. In the US, 15% to 20% is common for table service in restaurants. In many other countries tipping is smaller, optional, or already included as a service charge. Our Tip or Skip? guide covers customs country by country.

Can I split unevenly?

This calculator splits evenly. For uneven splits, run it once per person with their part of the bill and the same tip percentage.

What if a service charge is already on the bill?

Check the receipt. If a service charge or "gratuity" is included, an extra tip is optional. Enter 0% or a small custom amount.

Does it work in other currencies?

Yes. The math is the same for any currency; the dollar sign is just a label.
