What this tool does
The QR Code Generator turns a link or any text into a QR code you can download as a PNG image or as an SVG for print. Accents, other alphabets and emoji are encoded correctly.
How to use it
- Type or paste a link or text, then press Enter or Generate QR Code.
- Pick the code and background colors if you like. The tool warns you if they'd be hard to scan.
- Download a PNG (about 1,000 px, good for screens and documents) or an SVG (sharp at any size, best for print).
- Scan it with your phone to test it before you print or share it.
Static codes don't expire
The codes made here are static: the link or text is stored in the pattern itself. They work forever, as long as the link they point to still works. The flip side is that you can't change the destination after printing. Services that offer "dynamic" codes put their own redirect link in the code, which they can change, but it stops working if the service does.
What makes a code scan reliably
- Quiet zone: a light border four modules (squares) wide around the code, as the QR standard (ISO/IEC 18004) requires. It's included in every download, so don't crop it.
- Error correction: QR codes store extra data so a damaged code still reads. Level L can recover about 7% of the code, M 15%, Q 25% and H 30%. This tool uses H, the strongest, so smudges and scratches matter less.
- Contrast: use a dark code on a light background. Light-on-dark codes and pale colors fail on many scanners.
- Size: a common rule of thumb is to make the code at least a tenth as wide as the distance it's scanned from: about 3 cm across for a phone 30 cm away.
- Shorter is easier: long text makes a denser code with smaller squares, which needs to be printed bigger.
How big to print it
| Scanned from | Code at least |
|---|---|
| 30 cm (a menu or flyer in hand) | 3 cm wide |
| 1 m (a sign on a counter) | 10 cm wide |
| 3 m (a poster on a wall) | 30 cm wide |
| 10 m (a banner) | 1 m wide |
These follow the 10:1 rule of thumb. A code holding a long link or text has smaller squares, so print it bigger than this.
Frequently asked questions
Is my text sent anywhere?
No. The code is created in your browser.
Can I add a logo in the middle?
Not in this tool. Because the codes use the highest error correction, a small logo placed over the center in an image editor usually still scans, but always test it.
How should I test a code before printing?
Print one at the real size, then scan it with at least two different phones from the real distance and in the real light. Check that it opens the right page.
