What this tool does

The SEO Meta Tag Previewer shows how a web page could look in Google search results and when shared on Facebook or X, before you publish. Type a title, description, address and image link, and the previews update instantly.

How to use it

  1. Enter the page title (the HTML title tag).
  2. Enter the meta description.
  3. Enter the page address and the address of your share image.
  4. Switch between the Google, Facebook and X tabs.

How long should titles and descriptions be?

Google sets no fixed limit; it shortens titles and descriptions to fit the screen. On desktop, titles are usually cut at about 600 pixels, roughly 50 to 60 characters, and descriptions after roughly 150 to 160 characters. The counters turn orange past 60 and 160 as a guide. Put the most important words first.

Google may rewrite them

Google sometimes shows a different title, or builds a snippet from the page text instead of your description, when it thinks that matches the search better. A clear, accurate title and description make that less likely.

The tags behind each preview

  • Google: the title tag and the meta description.
  • Facebook, LinkedIn and others: Open Graph tags (og:title, og:description, og:image). Meta recommends an image of at least 1200 × 630 pixels.
  • X: Twitter Card tags (twitter:card, and the title, description and image). X falls back to Open Graph if they're missing. Its link-card layout has changed several times, so the X preview is approximate.

Good and weak examples

  • Weak title: "Home | My Site". It says nothing about the page.
  • Weak title: "Pizza Delivery Pizza Near Me Best Pizza Cheap Pizza". Repeating keywords is the kind of title Google tends to rewrite.
  • Good title: "Wood-Fired Pizza Delivery in Austin | Luigi's". What, where and who, in under 60 characters.
  • Weak description: "Welcome to our website. We have many great products."
  • Good description: "Order wood-fired pizza for delivery across central Austin. See the menu, prices and today's specials." Specific, and it tells people what they'll find.

Frequently asked questions

Is this exactly what Google will show?

No, it's a close approximation; Google's layout varies by device and search.

Does my page need to be live?

No. Nothing is fetched except the image you link.

What makes Google rewrite a title?

Google's documentation lists the usual causes: a missing or empty title, a very long one, keyword stuffing, boilerplate repeated on many pages, and a title that doesn't match the page's main heading. Fixing those makes your own title more likely to show.
