What this tool does
The Word Count & Read Time Calculator counts words and characters as you type or paste, and estimates how long the text takes to read silently or to say aloud.
How to use it
Paste your text; the counts and times update instantly.
How it counts
A word is any run of characters between spaces or line breaks, so "well-known" counts as one word and a number like 2026 counts as one. Characters are counted as you see them, so an emoji is one character. A second count leaves out spaces and line breaks.
How the times are worked out
time = words ÷ words per minute
- Reading: 238 words per minute. That's the average for adults reading English non-fiction silently, from a 2019 analysis of 190 studies (Brysbaert). Most people read 175 to 300 words per minute.
- Speaking: 150 words per minute, the typical conversational pace measured by the National Center for Voice and Speech. Slow, clear presenters run nearer 130, and fast talkers 170 or more.
A 1,000-word article takes about 4 minutes 12 seconds to read, and about 6 minutes 40 seconds to say at 150 words per minute.
Does word count matter for SEO?
Not directly. Google says it has no preferred word count. Write as much as the topic needs: a quick answer can be short, and a full guide can be long.
Typical lengths
| Where | Limit or norm |
|---|---|
| Post on X | 280 characters (emoji and many symbols count as 2) |
| Instagram caption | 2,200 characters |
| LinkedIn post | 3,000 characters |
| Google search snippet | About 150 to 160 characters shown |
| Common App personal essay | 250 to 650 words |
Use the character count for social posts and the word count for essays and articles.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my word processor show a different count?
Programs treat hyphens, numbers and symbols differently, so small differences are normal.
Is my text stored?
No. Everything stays in your browser.
What reading level should I aim for?
For a general audience, plain language works best: short sentences, everyday words and the active voice. Readability scores such as Flesch-Kincaid turn sentence and word length into a school grade, which is a useful rough check, though this tool doesn't calculate it.
