What this tool does

The Markdown Editor & Previewer shows what your Markdown looks like as you type. You can copy the HTML it produces or download your text as a .md file.

How to use it

  1. Type in the left box, or click Load Sample to see the main features.
  2. Check the result in the preview on the right.
  3. Click Copy HTML for the web version, or Download .md to keep the Markdown file.

Markdown basics

  • # Heading, ## Smaller heading
  • **bold** and *italic*
  • - item for a bulleted list, 1. item for a numbered list
  • [link text](https://example.com) for a link, ![description](image.png) for an image
  • > quote for a quotation
  • Backticks for `code`, and three backticks on their own lines for a code block
  • Tables with pipes: | Name | Age |, a line of |---|---|, then the rows

This editor follows GitHub-style Markdown, so tables, task lists and fenced code blocks work.

HTML inside Markdown

Markdown lets you mix in HTML. The preview shows it, but first removes anything that could run code, such as scripts or event handlers, so a document you paste from elsewhere can't do anything harmful on this page. The copied HTML is your text exactly as converted.

Tables and task lists

A table uses pipes, with a line of dashes under the header row:

| Item | Price |
            |------|------:|
            | Pen | $2 |

A colon at the right end of the dashes aligns that column to the right. A task list uses brackets: - [x] Done and - [ ] To do show as a ticked and an empty checkbox.

Markdown flavors

The core syntax is standardized by CommonMark, so headings, lists, links and emphasis work the same almost everywhere. GitHub Flavored Markdown adds tables, task lists, strikethrough (~~text~~) and automatic links, and this editor supports those too. Some sites add their own extras, such as footnotes, so a document can look slightly different from one site to another.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my preview look different on another site?

Each site styles Markdown its own way, and some support extra features. The structure (headings, lists, links) stays the same.

Is my text saved?

No. It stays in your browser and is gone when you close the page, so download it if you want to keep it.

Can I turn Markdown into a Word or PDF file?

Select the formatted preview, copy it and paste it into Word or Google Docs; headings, lists and links come along. From there you can save as PDF. For regular conversions, the free tool Pandoc converts Markdown to Word, PDF and many other formats.

How do I start a new line without a new paragraph?

A single line break in Markdown is ignored, so two lines run together. End the line with two spaces or a backslash (\) to force a line break, or leave a blank line between them to start a new paragraph.
