What this tool does
The Lorem Ipsum Generator makes placeholder text for designs and mockups, by paragraphs, sentences or words, so you can see a layout before the real words are ready.
How to use it
- Choose how many paragraphs, sentences or words you need (up to 100 paragraphs, 500 sentences or 5,000 words at a time).
- Keep Start with "Lorem ipsum..." ticked for the classic opening, or untick it for random text only.
- Click Generate Text, then Copy.
Where Lorem Ipsum comes from
The text is scrambled Latin from De finibus bonorum et malorum ("On the ends of good and evil"), written by the Roman statesman Cicero in 45 BC. The familiar "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet" is a cut-off version of a sentence about pain ("dolorem ipsum"). The version used today spread through Letraset's dry-transfer lettering sheets in the 1960s and later desktop publishing software. You may read that it has been used "since the 1500s"; there's no evidence for that date.
Why designers use it
Placeholder text has the rhythm of real writing, so a layout looks realistic, but nobody stops to read it, so attention stays on the design. Swap in real content as soon as you can, though: real headlines and paragraphs are often longer or shorter than the placeholder.
When to use real content instead
Placeholder text is handy early on, but real words change a design: product names are longer than "lorem", headlines wrap onto two lines, and translations are often longer than the English, sometimes much longer for short labels. Bring in real or realistic text first for headlines, buttons and navigation, where length matters most. For tables and dashboards, sample data that looks like the real thing (names, prices, dates) shows problems Latin can't.
Frequently asked questions
Does Lorem Ipsum mean anything?
Not really. It starts from real Latin, but words are cut and mixed, and the generated text is random words from the same vocabulary.
Can I use it in my projects?
Yes. It's placeholder text with no copyright concerns, but don't publish a site with it still in place.
Is it bad to leave Lorem Ipsum on a live site?
Yes. Visitors see an unfinished page, and search engines see a page without real content, which doesn't help it rank. Before launch, search your pages for "lorem" to catch leftovers.
How much placeholder text should I use?
About as much as the real content will have. A blog layout tested with one short paragraph can look very different once a long article arrives.
Can I get placeholder text in other languages?
This tool makes the classic Latin-style text only. To test a design for another language, use a real sample of that language, since word length, accents and line breaks differ from Latin.
